Convict Indents were the records of every convict that accompanied them when they were sent to the transportation ships for their trip to Australia.
They give details of the convicts description, where and when they were tried, their sentence, occupation and their native place.
This indent record was crucial in proving that William PETERS was actually William WELLARD.
It clearly shows the name WELLARD added to the entry of William Peters.
Unfortunately due to the lack of detailed records and no newspaper report of his trial we haven't been able to find out why he was tried and convicted under the name of Peters.
